The Luxembourg vineyards are located on the west bank of the Moselle river, which forms the border with Germany. In a strip of about 42 kilometers long and a few hundred meters wide. The vineyards are steep. Spectacularly steep sometimes. Most are oriented to the south, to optimally enjoy the sun in the cool Luxembourg climate.
There is not a huge difference between the Luxembourg vineyards. It is a matter of nuances. A distinction is usually made between the cantons of Remich and Grevenmacher. Remich is located in the south, from the municipality of Stadtbredimus to Schengen. The soil of the vineyards here contains clay marl and scum and the valley is quite wide. This is where the somewhat fuller, harmonious Luxembourg wines are made. In Grevenmacher the valley is narrower. There is lime in the soil. The wines here are somewhat more refined and have more character. They are generally better regarded than the wines from Remich.
Despite the - small - differences between the Luxembourg vineyards, all wines that meet certain quality standards are awarded the Appellation Contrôllée Moselle Luxembourgeoise. A distinction based on terroir is therefore not (yet) made in Luxembourg.
