Eger was besieged in 1592 by a superior force of Turkish soldiers. Hungarian soldiers drank their courage with red wine. They stood shouting on the city walls, their beards dripping with red wine. A rumor spread among the Turks that the Hungarians drank bull's blood, which would make them invincible. Eger is often compared to the French Burgundy. But in Eger many more different grapes are planted. And that is what the winemakers make their famous 'Bull's Blood' from. Since the fall of the wall, Eger has started a second youth. The quality of the wine region has improved rapidly. In 1995, 1998, 2005 and 2009 Eger delivered the Hungarian winemaker of the year.

Bloedwijn. Briljant verhaal, een Turks leger dat op de loop gaat voor Hongaren met bloed doorlopen baarden, wat wijn blijkt te zijn. Ik ben niet eerder zoveel druiven in een wijn gezien. Ik verwachte een dikke rode klont in mijn glas. Het werd een sterk aroma dat even op adem moest komen. Eenmaal gelucht en twee slokken verder werd die zacht in de mond. Nippen is genoeg voor smaakbeleving, zo vol. Genieten.
