Over millions of years, the Danube has carved the Wachau landscape tens of meters deep. The Wachau vineyards are located on the steep river slopes. As you walk down from the slope through the vineyards, you will encounter layers of mineral rock with granite, quartz feldspar, mica and gneiss. But also sand that was blown here by the wind at the end of the ice age. The sand has formed a thick layer of l&oumkl;ss. This diversity of the soil and the steep slope on the river makes the terroir of the Wachau very interesting.
