Bernhard Bredell is an example of a new generation of South African winemakers who approach things differently. Small-scale, with a great sense of history, terroir and nature. That looks like the 'natural wine movement' we see in Europe. It produces fascinating wines. Bernhard's are always flawless and light-footed. This is his Pinotage. From a vineyard on quartz soil. From almost 50 year old vines and a yield of 2.2 tons per hectare; extremely little. When you think of South African wines, you immediately think of Stellenbosch. This is where South African wine growing began in the seventeenth century. Stellenbosch is very varied in terms of landscape, soil and climate. This also applies to the wines that come from there. Stellenbosch is divided into several small 'wards' (micro-climate zones) with very regional wines. Some of the best wines of South Africa (still) come from Stellenbosch.
