Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva

Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva

Spain
2013 Spain | La Rioja
Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo
Hoge Vivino Score: 4.2
In our grandparents' time, it was completely normal for a good Rioja to spend ten years in the Bodega before the cellar master deemed it matured enough to be sold. But times are changing and Bodegas are bringing their wines to market more and more quickly. Good for the wallet. But there is no way back. Because that means no income for years. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is one of the few who has never changed tack.
This Reserva only left the Bodega last year. Rust brown now. With leather and gingerbread on the nose. Still alive with the joy of rosehips and - dare we say it - a lick of ketchup. The tannin is still present but has now softened. A special wine. Not heavy, just remarkably fresh. And clearly old. Just like grandpa liked it.

La Rioja

Wine has been produced in La Rioja since ancient times. Monks who went on a pilgrimage to Compostella in the Middle Ages drank in the red Rioja. They spread the fame of the region throughout Europe. But the real breakthrough came in the 19th century. Bordeaux was ravaged by the phylloxera epidemic. French wine merchants crossed the Pyrenees and taught the winemakers of La Rioja how to mature their wine in small oak barrels. They still do this today.
