The Blauburger is a typical Austrian grape variety that produces fruity, not too heavy wines with pleasant aromas of red berries and elderberries. They are elegant and easy to drink, with moderate tannins.
Blauburger is a cross between the Portugieser and Blaufränkisch grapes. It's another product of Austrian Dr. Fritz Zweigelt, who had also crossed the Zweigelt grape named after him a year earlier, in 1892. The initial idea was to plant Blauburger in "white vineyards," where red grapes struggled to ripen properly. Blauburger is primarily found in the Austrian Weinviertel region and in parts of Hungary. Many winemakers there blend it with other grapes. The violet-red Blauburger adds depth to the color of the red blend.
We currently have one wine made from the Blauburger grape in our range. You can view our Blauburger wine here.
