The crisp, fresh Riesling is one of the finest quality grapes in the world. It produces lean and elegant white wines with fresh acidity. It can exhibit a wide range of aromas and flavors: from peach, grapefruit, and green apple, to freshly cut grass, rose petals, and honey.
The soil on which Riesling grows has a major influence on the aroma and taste. A Riesling from loess tastes different from a Riesling grown on soil with a lot of granite or limestone.
Riesling is both famous and infamous for its 'goût de pétrole': an oily note in the aroma. Actually a fault, but some enthusiasts cannot get enough of this 'fault'.
Another quality of Riesling is its aging potential. The (better) Riesling is one of the few white wines that can be stored for years. They become richer in flavor and develop all kinds of new aromas and flavors.
You find Riesling mainly in Germany and France. In the Moselle, the Rheingau, the Pfalz, and Alsace, for example, great wines are made from it. Although less well-known, Austria is no less impressive. Rieslings from Wachau, Kremstal, or Kamptal also belong to the world's elite. These Rieslings often have more peach and apricot on the nose than the tighter Germans.
Riesling is (probably) a cross between Weisser Heunisch and Traminer. The former is nearly extinct. The latter explains the versatile aromas that can be found in the wine.
We currently have eleven wines made from the Riesling grape in our range. You can view our Riesling wines here.
