What Grüner Veltliner is to white wine, dark-skinned Zweigelt is to red Austrian wine: roughly speaking, the national pride. It is widely planted and produces lush, very fruity red wines. When buying Zweigelt, check whether it is a light version without oak aging, or a heavier barrique style - the flavor can differ considerably.
Zweigelt can have different faces. There is the young variant with hints of young red fruit, aged in steel and great to drink lightly chilled.
There are also fuller Zweigelts, with similar aromas of red fruit and dried plums, but often aged in oak and spicier, with tannins. Real top wines can be kept for more than five years.
Zweigelt was crossed in Austria in 1922 by Friedrich Zweigelt. It combines the elegance of 'mother' St. Laurent with the backbone of its Blaufränkisch 'father'. It produces lovely single-varietal wines, but Austrian winegrowers also like to blend it with, for example, Blaufränkisch, Syrah, Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon to make fine blends. Zweigelt also does excellently as a rosé: very fruity and warm.
We currently have six wines made from the Zweigelt grape in our range. You can view our Zweigelt wines here.
