This is what good wine from the Sämling 88 grape tastes like

Sämling 88 is the Austrian name for the grape better known as Scheurebe. Austrian winemakers use it primarily for their sweet wines. These are rich and broad in flavor, with fresh notes of grapefruit.

The Scheurebe was bred by Georg Scheu from Rheinhessen, who crossed Riesling with Silvaner in 1915. Or so he thought, because DNA research has shown that it is a cross between Riesling and a still unknown grape variety.

Scheu did not try to breed an 'improved Riesling' like many others, but a 'better Silvaner'; a Silvaner with more aroma and more resistance to diseases. We would not dare claim that the Scheurebe produces better wines than the Silvaner. But it is certain that the Scheurebe can produce beautiful sweet wines in Germany. Good dry Scheurebes are less easy to make, although we have tasted some very good versions.
