This is what good wine from the Monastrell grape tastes like

The Spanish Monastrell grape produces robust red wines with rich tannins and a spicy aroma. A good Monastrell has raspberry and blueberry flavors. They ripen with age, developing hints of leather on the nose.

Monastrell grows primarily in the Spanish province of Murcia. As Mourvèdre, it is best known in the South of France. In the New World, Monastrell is being experimented with, and there they consider Mataró a beautiful name for this grape.

The Spanish enjoy drinking Monastrell pure. In France, it usually ends up in a blend, preferably with Grenache, Cinsault, or Shiraz. An exception is Bandol in Provence. Here you'll find perhaps the best Mourvèdre varietal in the world.
