Frühburgunder is a mutation of Pinot Noir that has enjoyed a resurgence of interest in Germany in recent years. Frühburgunder produces soft red wines with a powerful aroma of blackcurrant and cherry.

Frühburgunder has been made into wine in Germany for centuries. After a period of decline, winemakers in the Ahr region, in particular, are now making fine wines from it again. They are allowed to use the "Grosses Gewächs" designation for their Frühburgunder, the highest German qualification for a dry wine. Winemakers in Rheinhessen, Franconia, and the Palatinate also enjoy Frühburgunder.

Frühburgunder ripens a few weeks earlier than its "big brother," the Pinot Noir. This is how it gets its name. It is also known in France as Pinot Noir Précoce, but it is no longer grown in vineyards there.
