Dornfelder is a German cross from 1956 whose ancestors are Blaufränkisch, Frühburgunder, Vernatsch, and Portugieser. Since the 1980s, wine from Dornfelder has been legal in Germany, and our eastern neighbors are increasingly doing so, particularly in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate. It is one of the few German grapes that gives wine a deep red color and depth, and winemakers are eager to exploit this.
