This is what good wine from the Nielluccio grape tastes like

Nielluccio is the name of the grape better known as Sangiovese in Corsica. It produces red wines with aromas often reminiscent of thyme, bitter cherries, violets, and freshly cut tomatoes. It combines crisp tannins with fresh acidity and a spicy note.

Corsica used to be Italian. That immediately explains why you find Nielluccio, or Sangiovese, here. It was probably brought here in the eighteenth century. Nowadays, Nielluccio is even the most widely planted grape variety on Corsica, and the islanders believe it originated there.

Does Nielluccio taste the same as Sangiovese? Not quite, in our opinion. We found the Nielluccio wines we tasted a bit leaner and less spicy than Italian Sangiovese. This may have something to do with the climate. Unlike the Sangiovese in Tuscany, Nielluccio grows right on the coast. And the soil—primarily slate in Corsica—can also have an influence.
