A ham generally goes well with a not too heavy, fresh and fruity red wine. If you prepare your ham in a sweet sauce with honey, for example, you are better off choosing a mature white wine, and that may have a sweet tone.
The red wines from the French Beaujolais are a good combination with ham. These are fresh red wines, with good acidity and almost no tannin. Young Pinot Noirs are also a good choice. In Austria you can find less obvious wines that go well with a ham, such as a fresh Zweigelt, Blauburger or St. Laurent.
