Budureasca Wines is one of the largest and most modern wineries in Romania. It lies about an hour's drive north of Bucharest, in the heart of Dealu Mare, the country's best-known red wine region. With around 275 hectares of its own vineyards, it is one of the largest producers in the region. Budureasca grows both indigenous Romanian grapes, such as Fetească Neagră, Fetească Regală and Tămâioasă Românească, and international varieties. Since its founding, British winemaker Stephen Donnelly has been at the helm.

The name Budureasca comes from a small river and a valley close to the vineyards. It is also the name of an archaeological site nearby. Winegrowing in this area goes back to antiquity, when the Dacians lived in what is now Romania. The Budureasca logo shows the head of the Dacian king Decebalus, who reigned from AD 85 to 106. The Vine in Flames wine range refers to a legend about King Burebista in the first century BC. He is said to have had the vineyards of the region burned, because the wine was so good that it attracted enemies.
Budureasca is in fact the successor to a Romanian state farm founded in 1950. In the late 1990s, the British Hanwood Group and winemaker Stephen Donnelly started a wine company in the region that made wines for export, including under the name Carpathian Hills. In the mid-2000s the company was taken over by a group of Romanian shareholders, who continued it under the name Budureasca. In 2006 and 2007 the vineyards were largely replanted. Around 25 hectares still consist of old vines some seventy years old. In 2013 the new winery opened, at the time the largest in Dealu Mare.
Stephen Donnelly, known as a "flying winemaker", now works together with Romanian winemaker Șerban Gheorghiu. According to the winery, its wines have now won hundreds of international medals, including at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. Budureasca exports to nineteen countries on four continents.
The Dealu Mare region, where Budureasca has its vineyards, lies in the southern foothills of the Carpathians. The vineyards are near the village of Gura Vadului, between the Teleajen and Buzău rivers, on hills and in valleys at 175 to 400 metres above sea level. The area lies on the same latitude as Bordeaux and Piedmont. The climate is temperate continental, with plenty of sun. In recent summers climate change has been clearly noticeable there, bringing record heat. The soil consists of fertile black earth and limestone. The slopes face south, ideal for winegrowing.
The terroir is especially suited to red grapes, but the white grapes also do well and give aromatic, fruity wines. On a separate plot Budureasca has planted an organic vineyard, and the winery has a dedicated area for organic wines. The red grapes include Romania's Fetească Neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The white grapes are the Romanian Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală and Tămâioasă Românească, complemented by Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Muscat Ottonel.
