The best wines from Franconia in Germany

The wine region of Franken is located in the middle of Germany. Franken has short warm summers and a wet, cold autumn. That does not make it easy to make great wines here. The Riesling has a hard time with it, it is mainly the Silvaner that produces beautiful wines in Franken.

Silvaner from Franconia

The Silvaner originally comes from Austria but is not planted there much anymore. Its heyday was a century ago. Nowadays it grows mainly in Germany. Since the middle of the last century, the Silvaner has no longer been seen as a major grape variety. That is slowly changing. There are more and more enthusiasts who appreciate the Silvaner. In the west of Franconia, mainly Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder are planted. Often on a soil of buntsandstein. Finally, the Müller-thurgau (the most widely planted grape in Franconia), the Scheurebe and the local specialty Bacchus are worth mentioning. They are usually bottled in Bocksbeutels, distinctive round bottles with a big belly.
