Vienna is the only capital in the world to be an independent wine district. Already in the early Middle Ages, the vineyards were within the walls of the old city. Today they criss-cross the hilly suburbs. Are you visiting Vienna? Then look for the traditional Viennese Heuriger: Small wine cafes where you can taste the local harvest. Most are spread across the city among the vineyards.

Vienna has approximately 600 hectares of vineyards. The reputation of Viennese wines has continued to improve in recent years. In Austria itself they have even achieved a certain cult status. It is mainly the white still and sparkling wines to which Vienna owes this.
In the hills north of the city, beyond the Danube, the Pinots are doing quite well. In the more western neighborhoods the soil contains a lot of limestone. Spicy Rieslings, Chardonnays and Weissburgunders (Pinot Blanc) are made here. The south of the city is a completely different story. Here Vienna borders the Wiener Wald. The black soil in the vineyards contains mainly blue grape vines.
If you walk through a vineyard these days - whether in Austria or elsewhere - you will see different grape varieties neatly lined up. The winegrower knows exactly which grape varieties are in which vineyard. That sounds logical, but things used to be very different in Austria. Gemischter Satz was still very common in the 19th century: different grape varieties were planted together in one vineyard. The grapes (one riper than the other) ended up together in the winegrower's unique blend.
Nowadays, Gemischter Satz is virtually non-existent, even in Austria. Except in some vineyards in Vienna. Here you can still find this special traditional wine under the name Wiener Gemischter Satz.
