The best wines from Dalmatia in Kroatië

In the Croatian wine region of Dalmatia, you will find the Plavac Mali, Crljenak, Plavina, Lasina, Trjnak and Babić grapes. They grow on the bone-dry hills along the Adriatic coast. These vineyards are often so steep and inhospitable that the harvest is done with donkeys. The grapes have to fight for every drop of water they can find in the ground. This makes the wine powerful and concentrated. For a long time it was thought that the Plavac Mali was the same grape as the Zinfandel, which is very popular in California. Research showed that it is related, but not identical. The also Croatian Crljenak, also called Tribidrag, turned out to be the 'real original Zinfandel'.
