White wines from Malvasia have a characteristic nutty character and often aromas of dried fruit and orange peel. They are generally quite ripe and pair well with grilled fish. Malvasia is primarily found in Mediterranean countries.
Malvasia is a very old grape variety, likely originating in Greece. Today, it's found in several varieties, primarily in Spain, Portugal, and Italy. White Rioja, for example, is usually a blend of Viura and Malvasia. Several Malvasia varieties, such as Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Malvasia de Casorzo, and Malvasia del Lazio, are grown in Italy. Madeira is home to Malvasia Fina, which is called Malmsey here.
In Tuscany, it's often blended with the Trebbiano grape. Less well-known is that it's a key ingredient in Portuguese Madeira, possibly because it was corrupted to the English-sounding "Malmsey" on the island of the same name.
In Croatia and western Slovenia, a bottle of Malvasia—or "Malvazija," as it's called here—is also a popular accompaniment to grilled fish with garlic and spinach.
We currently have six wines made from the Malvasia grape in our range. You can view our Malvasia wines here.
