Argyros Estate is the small family estate of the Argyros family on Santorini. For four generations the family has made wine here from the island's local grapes, such as Assyrtiko. Over time the business has expanded considerably and the cellars have been fully modernized. The current winemaker, Matthew Argyros, has moreover succeeded in exporting his wines to other countries, where they are also excellently received by wine critics.

The current winemaker, Matthew Argyros, has followed in his ancestors' footsteps. His great-grandfather Georgios Argyros started the estate on Santorini in 1903. He had only five ares of vineyard and made wine intended for local consumption, in the traditional way that had been customary on Santorini for centuries. In 1950, Matthew Argyros (the grandfather) took the helm and expanded the vineyards to 15 ares.
The founder's grandson - and father of the current winemaker - Yiannis Argyros gave the business an enormous boost. He took over from his father in 1974, expanded the vineyards to 65 ares, and modernized the wine cellar.
Matthew works in a very modern way but has stayed true to his ancestors' legacy. He is a great promoter of Santorini's typical grapes - you won't find Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay in his vineyard. He works only with the white Assyrtiko, Athiri and Aidani, which together form the typical blend for the island's ultra-fresh white wines. For his red wines he uses Mandilaria, Mavrathiro, Mavrotragano and Voudomato.
The vines don't stand in rows as in most vineyards. The soil of volcanic Santorini consists of lava, iron and ash, bone-dry from the fierce north wind. The winegrowers keep the vines low and shape them into small bushes to protect the grapes from the wind and sun. The vines drink from the mist that drifts over the island at night, but the juice yield per hectare is very limited, which keeps them from being cheap. We currently have one wine from Argyros Estate in our range. You can view all our wines from Argyros Estate here.
