The French wine region Bergerac is older than Bordeaux. Already in the fifteenth century, the sweet wines from Bergerac were world famous. The barrels were highly valued in Holland. Nowadays Bergerac is in the shadow of Bordeaux. Most wines are dry, but good sweet wines are still made, just like in the 15th century.
Most wine from Bergerac is bottled under the name Bergerac AC or Côtes de Bergerac. They are dry and are made from grapes that are also common in Bordeaux: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sémillon, Muscadelle and Sauvignon Blanc.
In Montravel, fresh white wines are made from Sémillon, Muscadelle and especially Sauvignon Blanc. They are slightly aromatic and have a good structure. If you have a Côtes-de-Montravel or Haut-Montravel in your glass, you are drinking the same wine as your great-grandfather and mother did.
Monbazillac and Saussignac are sweet wines from Bergerac. Monbazillac is quite famous as a fair alternative to the famous Sauternes from Graves. Monbazillac en Saussignac is made from Sémillon, Odenc, Sauvignon and Muscadelle, which are normally blended. The grapes are harvested late, when noble rot has occurred. They have a deep yellow color with a taste of honey, acacia, peach, sweet plum and fresh citrus.
