This is what good wine from the Silvaner grape tastes like

The white Silvaner grape often produces friendly, softly fresh, frequently rather neutral white wines. Many Silvaners are not very outspoken, light, and hard to recognize in a blind tasting. But there are lovely exceptions. Some winemakers manage to press their Silvaners into deliciously fresh, floral and juicy white wines. Silvaner is on the rise.

Silvaner is considered an Austrian grape, but it is not planted much there anymore - only in Niederösterreich do you still find it. Most Silvaners now come from Germany, especially from Rheinhessen, the Pfalz and Franken. Silvaners from Franken are the most highly regarded, although in recent years winemakers in Rheinhessen and the Pfalz have also emerged who know how to press very fine Silvaners.

In France, Sylvaner, as it is spelled there, grows only in Alsace. There, Sylvaner is one of the less important white grapes, tasting somewhat similar to Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois. In Italy you can still find Silvaner wines in Alto Adige, in the far north.
