Pairing wine with a steak is not too difficult. Choose a fairly full red wine and it may well have some tannin. Pay particular attention to whether you serve a sauce with your steak, which can have consequences.
A steak with pepper sauce goes very well with a Cabernet Sauvignon that has been aged in wood. This could be a French Médoc, but also a Cabernet from the New World.
If you serve a blue cheese sauce with the steak, then besides Cabernet Sauvignon, a Italian Sangiovese from Chianti is an option. Northern Italians from the Nebbiolo grape are also a great wine-food combination with steak.
