In terms of surface area, Molise may be one of the smallest wine regions in Italy, but it nevertheless produces a large amount of wine. Unfortunately, it is rarely interesting enough to be exported. That is why you do not often see wine from Molise on the shelves of Dutch liquor stores.

Molise is located on the Adriatic coast, in the middle of Italy, between Abruzzo and Puglia. The vineyards are located on hills, right on the coast. There are two DOCs: Biferno and Pentro di Isernia. Most of the wine is made by small farmers, as a side activity and mainly intended for drinking by themselves. From grapes that you also find in neighboring Abruzzo, such as Montepulciano and Trebbiano and from some varieties that have come over from other regions, such as Greco or Aglianico. A grape unique to the region is the Tintilia del Molise, from which a talented winemaker can make very nice wines. And of course, there are always exceptions that prove the rule: Molise also has winemakers who are well above average.
