Campania is the southern Italian wine region, near Naples on the coast. Wines are made from characteristic grapes such as Aglianico and Greco di Tufo. They grow on volcanic slopes of Vesuvius. But also on beautiful islands such as Capri and Ischia. Campania was the most important wine region of the Roman Empire. An achievement that the winemakers would like to match again.

Calenian, Massic and especially Falernian. These are names of wines from Campania, which were once the best in the world. But that was a while ago. About two thousand years to be precise. When Campania was the centre of the global wine trade. But with the demise of the Port city of Pompeii, the importance of wine growing in Campania was also lost.
Nowadays, some passionate winemakers are trying to recreate Falernian: as Falerno del Massico DOC. A blend of the original grapes that still grow in the region: Aglianico, Piedirosso and the more famous Primitivo and Barbera. The results are still pending, but we are looking forward to tasting 'Roman wine' again.
Aglianico, Greco di Tufo and Fiano
The Aglianico grape is the red flagship of Campania. It can compete with the best blue grapes from Northern Italy such as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Aglianico is the ingredient of the Taurasi DOC, the most prestigious red wine from Campania. The Piedirosso is the main ingredient of the Lacryma Cristi del Vesuvio, or: 'the tears of Christ'.
The dry white wine from Campania is among the most aromatic in the country. Usually made from Greco di Tufo, Fiano or Falanghina. The Fiano d'Avellino DOCG is a beautiful white wine with hints of pear and hazelnuts. Greco di Tufo (from the village of Tufo in Campania) comes from volcanic vineyards and has a rich taste of peach and almond. The Falanghina is the least prestigious of the three, but produces pleasant fresh white wines that are not out of place with a fish dish. We currently have two wines from Campania in our range.
